Makaela May Silarsah
"Every piece of artwork I’ve created is a part of me".
My name is Makaela May Silarsah and I’ve lived in Melbourne my whole life and have only moved houses once. Until this year I hated school, it was a place of small minded people and I didn’t fit in. Drawing was a means of expressing myself anywhere, anytime. From drawing on a napkin or the front of my school books, I would dream of making art on a canvases. But there wasn’t always enough money. Drawing became my outlet and freedom from reality. It was something I did for me, and me alone.
This year I started a new school and feel more supported in my choices. I love being creative and anything that involves using my imagination. At my new school, this quality is encouraged. I probably wouldn’t have even thought to apply for this scholarship program if it wasn’t for the school staff. I’m excited and a little nervous to have this opportunity to share my artwork with an audience… this is a first for me. A “real” chance to show others my perspective of the world was a surprising gift.
